Let's start
A large trestle : 90 cm.
Starting material :
An ordinary wooden trestle table of standard size or larger. From a DIY store.
A 1 cm diameter round wooden stick
A spool of cotton thread for tapestry.
A small trestle : 45 cm.
Of course these materials will be reduced to the size or the finish product but many technics allow to vary the size.
Look at "Berber Carpet" in the Jasmin gallery : this tapestry was achieved by weaving three different pieces fixed to a background woven in an ancient way.
Don't forget that weaving has always existed. The wonderful oriental carpets were often woven on very simple looms.
The oldest loom I know of is one where the warp threads are stretched between the trunk of the tree and your waist !
High heddle loom
Neolithic period
Low heddle loom
Bobbin for the weft thread.
With your 1 cm diametre wooden stick you have to cut 15 cm long pieces. The ends should be pointed the centre should be narrowed. It is on this bobbin that the weft thread is wound.
The cotton threads for warping the loom.
Please note that this product is difficult to procure.
The warp is the vertical part of your work that does not move.
the weft is what you weave horizontally with your bobbin.
The thickness of the warp threads.
To begin with use 12x12 cotton : this is a fairly large thread which allows you to see your mistakes quickly. Then 20x13 or 20x8 are a standard thickness.
Top thread : 20x8
Bottom thread : 12x12
