The tapestries shown on the site are worked on a vertical loom.
This type of loom allows me to see the entire work at all times. It also allows me to work globally on the original theme of colours or to move away from the initial project.
At first the project is blurred and disorganised : we draw, erase. Then you have to make the pattern : this is the final cartoon that will be placed behind the warp. This pattern must be kept and followed.
At the same time the shapes and the tonality of the work will define the dimensions, the colours and the materials that will be used.
Then it’s time to study the colours and how to place them. Is there a dominant light colour ? A dark one ?
If you don’t have the right colour, you can make it by mixing several very fine threads.
After that you can warp the loom.
This way of putting the cotton warp in place allows the work to be tensioned again with special knots. Now you have to define the thickness of this warp thread and calculate the space between each thread. The pattern decides these parameters. For a more accurate design a small gauge and a tighter warp are used.
This way it is possible to keep the line without any ugly breaks.
For a simpler or thicker design a larger and more widely spaced warp can be used. The final work size is not important. It is only the design and the choice of weft yarns that decides on this process.
The work can begin. The weft thread is wound on the bobbin which is passed between the threads of the warp
Very specific techniques provide all the effects.
This is the knowledge of a true profession.
